The Director earlier made a documentary about this which got a huge response.

But i guess the success of the movie lies in the fact that I spent so much time thinking about the movie even after I left the movie hall.Productions : Newton Movies, Dr. In no particular order, what happened to the hero's political career-did he lose to his dad? how did those dynamics play out? did the two families who were so close never approach other and talk the issue out? what explains the silence of Kanchanamala's dad? Is it really true that the only three times they attempted to break the shackles something incredibly dramatic happened (two deaths and one near death)? Why did the couple leave such long gaps between each attempt? And i could go on and on. And despite the length of the film, i left the hall with several unanswered questions in my mind. At 2.45 hours, you do feel that it is a bit indulgent. What the movie could have done with is a tighter edit. Direction by RS Vimal is also topnotch and the effort he put in studying the real life of Moideen and Kanchanamala are visible all through the film. The attention to detail in capturing the period of the movie is worth mentioning and the sequence from Lisa with Jayan's "alavalathi shaji" dialogue was a nice touch. The locations are perfect for the movie and the lush green beauty of Kerala is captured well by the cinematographer. Sharadambaram plays true to its nadagaganam genre. Mukkathe Penne is haunting as it plays its way through the movie. Two songs - Kannondu Chollanu and Kaathirunnu Kaathirunnu are simply excellent and Shreya Ghoshal again shows us why she is the best singer in the country currently. Prithviraj essays the role with ease as one would expect from an actor of his calibre.

Rain is present all through the movie right from the football sequence in the beginning to the songs to every important twist and turn the plot takes making you wonder if Mukkam was in fact Cherapunjee. But the movie hinges on its main cast - Prithviraj as Moideen, Parvathy as Kanchanamala and the rain, as well, itself. Bala as Kanchanamala's brother and Sudheer Karamana as the hero's friend acquit themselves well. Sai Kumar as the dad reprises roles he has done several times before. Amongst the supporting cast, Lena in particular stands out as Moideen's mother. The casting in the movie is absolutely spot on with each and every actor living their character. In fact, the first time they hold hands is a good 10 years or so after they fall in love! For most of the movie, the lovers are kept apart and they communicate through coded messages in letters. The film is a romance set in the 70's when love was so innocent that even in song sequences the hero and heroine don't touch each other once. How many hundreds of times have we seen this before? But what really makes this one stand apart is the fact that this is a true story where one of the protagonists is still alive. The plot is a straightforward inter-caste romance with families playing spoilsport. By then the good word of mouth had gotten to me and I walked in with a lot of expectations even though a tragic love story is not really my favourite genre. I caught this movie late as it released in Bangalore almost two weeks after its Kerala release.
